Energy transmission and positioning for eRTG cranes

Rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) do not require a guide rail. They can switch between different container aisles and are therefore particularly flexible.

Electrification of RTG cranes using conductor rails has been state-of-the-art for some time because it is more sustainable and reduces maintenance and operating costs in the terminal. This is done either by a manual current collector trolley including a plug system, or fully automatically. For this purpose, an automatic telescopic arm engages in the conductor rail, via which the system is supplied with power and data. High transmission rates enable automatic operation via remote desk control and speed up container handling.

To switch between lanes, the hybrid vehicles usually also have a diesel engine on board. However, RTGs could also be equipped with energy storage systems that enable battery-powered block switching.

VAHLE is an expert in the field of port technology. With our revolutionary eRTG system, we have a high-performance solution that has been specially developed for terminals and covers energy supply as well as data transmission and positioning. In this way, we ensure efficient operation inside and outside the container aisles and full control at all times.
